We want them to be effective and leave us glowing. We also want them to be made consciously from natural resources, using methods and practices that respect the earth. We want them to be packaged in thoughtful, recyclable containers—and of course, it doesn’t hurt if they look cute in our #shelfies, too.

Meet five of our favorite eco-friendly brands that check all of these boxes.

1. Meow Meow Tweet

Meow Meow Tweet founders (and husband and wife!) Tara Pelletier and Jeff Kurosaki started their business in Brooklyn in 2009, though they eventually moved to the Hudson Valley. The brand was named for their two cats and bird–so it’s no surprise they’re leaping bunny-certified. They also use no plastic in their packaging. Each container of their bestselling deodorant is hand-wrapped in post-consumer waste paper, illustrated by Jeff himself.

2. Laurel Whole Plant Organics

Laurel Shaffer was originally a sommelier (sound familiar?), but eventually switched gears to the path that led her to create her brand. Laurel specializes in plants—and she knows her stuff so well, some in the indie beauty world even refer to her as the “plant whisperer.” Her greatest source of inspiration is nature, so it’s no surprise that she seeks to respect the earth in her business practices, too. Most of Laurel’s products are 100% whole-plant organic, which means the plants used (of which no part goes to waste) are not manipulated from a molecular standpoint or refined with harsh chemicals; nor do they contain isolates or ‘derivatives’ of plants. Laurel also works to source her ingredients as close to home as possible to reduce the brand’s carbon footprint, choosing to invest in farmers who grow medicinal plants here in the States—and ideally, in her home state of California.

3. Kjaer Weis

Kirsten Kjaer Weis, the makeup artist behind the beauty brand, grew up on a farm in Denmark before becoming an in-demand makeup artist to top editorial clients. Frustrated by the irritating, skin-damaging results of synthetic makeup, and the lack of high-performance makeup available to her, she resolved to create her own line. The result is a brand that makes sustainability chic. Every single item of Kjaer Weis’s architectural-chic packaging is refillable. She’s a pioneer in the beauty industry, ushering clean makeup into the luxury sector with products that are essentially objets d’art.

4. Tata Harper

Tata Harper has been making clean beauty cool since day one. She creates complex formulations, some of which are made with ingredients grown on the Vermont farm she calls home. Tata’s philosophy is that more ingredients yield better results—so her products are jam-packed with active botanical ingredients. Her iconic green products are also made with sustainability top-of-mind. Tata and her team chose glass as it’s highly recyclable and reusable—but their attention to eco-friendly details doesn’t stop there. The brand’s tubes are made with plastic resin, derived from corn (a renewable resource) as opposed to petroleum; and their boxes, from 100% post-consumer materials or recycled cardboard.


One of the true OGs of natural skincare, OSEA harnesses the antioxidant, nutritional properties of seaweed to create plant-based, non-toxic products. Founded by Jenefer Palmerin in 1996, the brand uses organic, bioavailable seaweed infused with pure steam-distilled and cold-pressed essential oil. The result is powerful products that keep skin looking clear and youthful. Their seaweed is hand-harvested with the utmost care off the coast of Patagonia. One of the species OSEA harvests, Undaria, is in fact invasive to the waters, so by removing it, the natural species of algae in this pristine water source can continue to flourish in the ecosystem.
