Clean Break with Laney of The Moment
We’re so excited to share this Clean Break story from one of our favorite beauty and wellness bloggers, Laney Crowell of The Moment. As a new mother and clean beauty enthusiast, Laney shares tips on how to make the switch and a few things she wishes she knew before becoming a mom.
Tell us about your clean beauty journey. Why did you decide to make the switch?
My obsession with clean beauty happened pretty slowly. It actually started with food. I was working in a corporate job in a windowless office and was feeling really not well. Not well at all. I was sluggish and I had so many stomach problems. I started paying attention to the food that I eat, which lead me to learning about the wellness world in general, which lead me to beauty. Now I try to live a toxin-free life as much as possible, simply because I just feel so much better! Currently, I’m doing an overhaul of the cleaning supplies in our house to make sure they are all toxic free as well. And I’m researching which organic mattress we should get when we get a new bed.
What transformative results have you seen after switching to clean products?
I think the most exciting is that I feel better overall. My skin is clearer and healthier, which is great, but I feel better at my core. I have more energy and I’m happier.
Any tips for readers on how to get started?
Start with one product at a time. I recommend starting with your shower essentials first since this is what your skin absorbs that most. Get a great bar soap (I like Osmia), and clean shampoo and conditioner (I like Rahua). Then get a clean moisturizer or body oil for post-shower. Since you put it all over your body, it’s really important to use a clean version. I use a bunch of different ones but I like Peet Rivko’s body oil a lot. Next, I would suggest a clean deodorant. I’m a big fan of Agent Nateur. After you swap out all of the big body items, I would move on to face. Start with skincare. Get a great cleanser, serum, oil, eye cream, and mist. I love True Botanicals and Odacité. And then start experimenting with makeup. Replace your tinted moisturizer, lip balm, and blush. The rest will come naturally. Also, make sure to clean out your products every 6 months!
So what’s the #1 product that you recommend switching?
Body wash. Your body is absorbing everything in the shower, making it even more susceptible to toxins. It’s also the easiest things to replace. I love a great big bar soap like [those from] Osmia or Saipua. They smell great and are super moisturizing. Plus, there’s less waste than with a bottle of body wash.
What does your skincare routine look like these days?
My skincare routine is always changing because I’m always testing new products for The Moment. Right now, I’m using a balm cleanser from De Mamiel. Then I use a toner from Ren. Next I love a mist, like Odacité. Then I like to use a couple serums and oils and layer them for ultimate hydration. Then I put on sunscreen and I’m ready to go. Sometimes I put on makeup too, but only when it feels like an occasion. When you have really good skincare you don’t really need makeup on a daily basis.
Which clean products can you recommend for baby?
I love Earth Tu Face’s cleanser for Isabella. It’s meant for your face but it’s perfect for her. It comes in glass which I appreciate since I try to avoid plastic as much as possible. I also really like Jiva Apoha’s baby body oil. I give Isabella massages every night before bed and it’s a beautiful blend of sweet almond oil with a little lavender to help her relax.
Any tips for new mothers that you wish you knew?
Oh wow, yes, so many. I don’t even know where to start! I think my number one tip is to listen to your intuition. As a mother, you know your baby so well. And the more you listen and respect your intuition the stronger it will get. People love to give advice and sometimes think they know what you should do, but if you’re tapped in, you know all there is you need to know.
